The Annona, the ancient fruit that comes from afar...
The Annona (in Calabrian dialect “a nona” or “u nonu”, scientific name: Annona Cherimola or Chirimoya) is a fruit of clear tropical origins. It arrived in our country about 200 years ago through the numerous trade exchanges that at the time there were with the Spanish; the latter, formerly settled in the territories of Central and South America, over the centuries had imported numerous crops to the Old Continent, including this splendid, unique and wonderful fruit.
One of the most curious aspects lies in the fact that the Annona has taken root exclusively in the territory of Reggio Calabria, and in particular in the narrow coastal and pre-hill strip that stretches between Scilla and Pellaro, for no more than 50 km: it is precisely the fact that in Italy it is possible to find it in this narrow patch of land that makes it a unique fruit.
Among the varieties of the Annona Cherimola, we find the ‘Fino de Jete’ and ‘Campas’; next to them, there are local varieties probably developed over the decades by the hybridization process: thus, although more sporadically, the Squamosa or Atemoya species can be found, sometimes even in the same orchard.

SPECIAL FRUIT
Annona CHERIMOLA or CHERIMOYA
Annona Cherimola or “Cherimoya” is undoubtedly the most valuable of the great Annonaceae family, of tropical origin, probably originating in the Andean highlands of Peru. It was imported about two centuries ago by the Spanish and has found its ideal microclimate in the coastal area of Reggio Calabria, where there is the only plantation in Italy.
The Annona fruit appears green in color and homogeneously cordiform or conical in shape, with a very thin skin and homogeneously medium depressed areoles.
Its soft and creamy-white flesh has a high sugar concentration (varying from 16 to 25° Brix), is not very juicy and above all characterized by an exceptional sweet and aromatic exotic-type taste: its intense fragrance and very delicate aroma are similar to those of banana, strawberry, pineapple and other tropical fruits. The fruit is enjoyed at the right degree of ripeness (basically when it is soft to the touch and the skin begins to show brown veins) by cutting it in half and eating it by the spoonful.
Annona is highly sought after not only for its enveloping and intense flavor, but also for its nutraceutical properties: not only is it rich in vitamins, proteins, and minerals, but above all in antioxidants, which are exceptional for protecting the human body and defending cells from the oxidative stress of free radicals.
The harvesting period is normally from mid-September until the first decade of December, but may vary according to weather patterns. Storage at room temperature after harvest is relatively short, about 8 to 10 days; at low temperatures and in cool environments, on the other hand, it can last a few days longer.
Annona ATEMOYA - GEFFNER VARIETY
This type of Annona, sister to the more renowned Annona Cherimola or “Cherimoya”, is a hybrid cultivar derived from Annona Muricata or Squamosa and Annona Cherimola, developed in Florida and also planted and rooted in the territory of Reggio Calabria for several decades where the particular microclimate has allowed its exceptional development.
Its peculiarity is to have a glossy skin rich in tapered but not pointed outgrowths. Compared to Cherimola, this type of cultivar is harvested between December and February as it is not affected by low temperatures and fruit set occurs in midsummer. For this reason, it is called “Late Annona”. Storage after harvest is relatively short, about 12 to 15 days at room temperature, while, at low temperatures and in cool environments, it can last a few days longer.
